LILA Asturias is a Spanish laboratory that analyzes dairy production. It works with dairy farmers from all over Asturias region, providing daily microbiological, chemical and physical analysis.
LILA developed a BlackBerry® solution designed to deliver lab results quickly and meeting regulatory standards. They gave 1,800 dairy farmers BlackBerry smartphones so they can receive the latest lab reports directly, barely 24 hours after the completion of the tests.
The result is higher quality and increased revenues.Preliminary studies show that dairy farmers have been able to increase yields by up to 50% thanks to the BlackBerry solution. The aim is to equip farmers with fast, easy, and secure means of communication, allowing dairy farms located at great distances fromtowns to use the new ICTs on a regular basis so that L.I.L.A.-Asturias can instantaneously and reliably communicate the results of tests on their samples.
Life before LILA CV
Before the establishment of the LILA virtual community, dairy farmers in Asturias communicated with the LILA lab on matters of milk quality via SMS. this is a very limited way to display information, and reaction real-time was not possible. the income of a dairy farmer depends on the quality of the milk as rated by the lab, and the poor comunication had negative financial consequences.
LILA CV was born as an Plan Avanza project. Plan Avanza is the Spanish equivalent of the EU Framework projects, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Industry throught of the States Secretary General in TIC´S.
What does LILA CV do?
Every month the LILA labs analyze five samples per farm based on 8 quality parameters. the price that the farmer can charge per litre of milk is based on the average ratings of these five samples.
Each parameter is meassured in a different way – for example the protein is an arithmetic mean while the bacteriology is a geometric mean in a different time-frame. This means that the information needed by the farmer is quite complex.
LILA CV allows us to send this information real-time. Time is vital here – imagine there is very low value for one of the parameters which lowers the final quality of the milk. the farmer needs this detailed information asap in order to take appropriate meassures. their income is at stake. on top of that with our application they can contact the vets directly and share this information with them, hence solving the problem quickly.
LILA CV is more than a work application for the farmers in Asturias
The farmers in LILA CV have BlackBerry devices with a flat Movistar rate that allows them to check the internet, for example prices of cow feed or machinery, read the news and contact each other. Once we managed to break the ice we found that farmers love their devices and carry them everywhere.
One of the most satisfactory parts is the social aspect. Farmers are very often more modern that they ar epictured, but there are still many of them in their 50s who have never sat in front of a computer and had never thought of using the internet. LILA CV has been for them the first contact with the web. now we often find them climbing up the hill or down at the local cidre bar for the best network coverage so they can download the lab report.
And to chat with each other! We have created a real virtual community. according to Google Analytics we have 20-22.000 entries in the community web.
LILA CV in the media
LILA CV was presented to its first 1000 members in an act with participation of the Director General de Agricultura of the Asturias regional government, and the Director General of the IDEPA (the institute of economic development of the Asturial region).
This was covered in the media of the Asturias region, for example
- The Asturias local TV covered it several times as you can see in the vidos in their web: http://www.rtpa.es/buscador?cx=004387396151026035952%3Ah93ppng8p5u&cof=FORID%3A9&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=blackberry+lila+&sa=Buscar&siteurl=www.rtpa.es%2F#625
- emprendedorestv.com, the Spanish channel on internet TV for entrepreneurs, prepared a very nice video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMibA4harmo
- La Nueva España, the main newspaper of the Asturias region, covered the presentation in their article humorously entitled “Un mensaje que es la leche”http://www.lne.es/asturias/2010/11/04/asturias-mensaje-leche/989616.html
2010 has been a great year for LILA CV. we have been awarded:
- ‘Best SME Project ‘ of year 2010 by Fundetec. These awards are given in Spain to projects that promote the development of the information society, the use of ICT technologies and the reduction of the digital gap in Spain.
- Citizens of the Year for the Asturias region
This was covered in the media as can b seen here http://www.lavozdeasturias.es/asturias/Especial-Asturianos-Ano_ASTFIL20110409_0001.pdf
- Wordwide finalists for the Wireless Achievements award from our partners BlackBerry
